Now we want to compare our sample results to a conjecture about the population of all students at your school. Let represent the proportion of all students at your school who would pick scissors (our unknown parameter).
(e) IF students at your school pick randomly among the three gestures, what numerical value would that imply for the value of the population parameter?
(f) IF there is anything to this theory that students are less likely to pick scissors, what does that imply about the value of ?
Note: If your class picked scissors more than one-third of the time, then technically we could stop the analysis here, as we won't find evidence that the population picks scissors less than one-third of the time. But we will continue for practice - just make sure you look in the "less than" direction when finding your p-value....
